Since the late 20th century, a paradigm shift from traditional spoon-feeding to the innovative "teach less, learn more" approach has profoundly transformed the educational landscape. While the conventional belief dictates that more instruction inevitably yields greater knowledge acquisition, I strongly advocate for the latter trend. In my view, teaching less cultivates autonomous learning, fosters critical thinking, and ultimately leads to deeper comprehension. Reflecting upon my high school experience vividly substantiates this perspective. In our traditional history classes, the teacher incessantly bombarded us with an overwhelming myriad of dates and events. Consequently, we became passive recipients of information, memorizing facts merely to ace examinations. The knowledge, acquired through rote learning, dissipated shortly after the tests. Conversely, my civic education teacher adopted a "teach less, learn more" strategy. Instead of delivering exhaustive lectures, she merely introduced core concepts and subsequently assigned us topical projects to explore contemporary social issues. This student-centered approach compelled my peers and me to conduct independent research, engage in rigorous debates, and synthesize diverse viewpoints. Although the teacher spoke significantly less, our intellectual curiosity was profoundly stimulated. We not only internalized the democratic mechanisms but also developed indispensable problem-solving skills.
