第 三 題

三、英文作文:(40 分) According to recent news reports, there is a lot of promise and opportunity associated with self-driving cars, but there are also a lot of questions and concerns. The technology is still being developed and tested, so workarounds for some of the above-mentioned problems might be created as yet, but the system is not perfect at present. Write an essay in at least 250 words with two paragraphs. In the first paragraph please describe, based on your knowledge, what self-driving cars may be like and whether we should continue developing self-driving cars. In the second paragraph, please describe both the pros and the cons of your stance.

【範文】 The advent of fully autonomous vehicles promises a profound paradigm shift in modern transportation. Envisioning the future, self-driving cars will likely be interconnected, steering-wheel-free mobile lounges where commuters can work, relax, or sleep during their journeys. These vehicles will communicate seamlessly with urban infrastructure and each other through advanced artificial intelligence and sophisticated sensor networks, effectively eliminating the stress of daily navigation. Despite the myriad of technical glitches and regulatory uncertainties that currently plague their testing phases, I firmly believe that we should steadfastly continue the development of self-driving cars. The pursuit of this technology is not merely a quest for convenience, but a critical step toward a safer and more efficient societal infrastructure. Relinquishing this endeavor due to present, resolvable imperfections would be undeniably shortsighted and detrimental to long-term technological progress. Advocating for the continued development of autonomous vehicles entails acknowledging both the significant advantages and the inherent risks of this stance. The primary pro of pushing forward lies in the potential to drastically reduce traffic fatalities. Given that the vast majority of accidents are caused by human error—such as fatigue, intoxication, or distraction—replacing drivers with infallible algorithms could save countless lives globally. Furthermore, autonomous fleets would optimize traffic flow, reduce carbon emissions, and grant unprecedented mobility to the elderly and the disabled. Conversely, the cons of persisting with this nascent technology are substantial. Continuing development requires exorbitant financial investments and poses complex ethical and legal dilemmas, particularly regarding liability in unavoidable crashes. Additionally, widespread adoption raises severe cybersecurity concerns, as hackers could potentially hijack systems, leading to catastrophic consequences. Moreover, millions of professional drivers face the imminent threat of technological displacement. Nevertheless, I contend that by enacting robust legal frameworks and rigorous testing protocols, society can mitigate these drawbacks, ensuring that the immense long-term benefits of self-driving cars are safely and equitably realized.
