【範文】 According to the IMO's framework, e-navigation aims to enhance berth-to-berth navigation through the harmonized integration and exchange of maritime information. Within this paradigm, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) serves as the indispensable communication backbone between ship and shore, ensuring safety, security, and environmental protection. The primary role of GMDSS in e-navigation is to guarantee robust and reliable data exchange. Traditionally designed for automated distress alerting and the broadcasting of Maritime Safety Information (MSI), GMDSS is currently undergoing a comprehensive modernization to fit seamlessly into the e-navigation architecture. By integrating advanced communication technologies such as the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) and modern recognized mobile satellite services (e.g., Iridium and Inmarsat Fleet Safety), GMDSS provides the essential digital infrastructure required for real-time, high-capacity ship-to-shore and ship-to-ship data exchange.
