I grew up on a farm in Colombia, a poor country in South America. The lack of rain has been killing many of the people who live around here. My friends and I have been helping them survive, but we’re not superheroes. We are just beans, little beans that grow in the dirt. Yet it’s our ability to grow in the dirt that makes us so special. We’re called guajiro beans, and we don’t need much water. In fact, sometimes we can sprout from dry land. There are lots of nutrients in the soil that we can take in and grow from. When we’re fully developed in our pods, we contain vitamins, minerals, and proteins. That is why we have been able to help so many people. As you know, Earth’s climate is changing. Here in Colombia, we’re feeling the effects. About ten years ago, the rain stopped coming. Our rivers have dried up, our forests have burned down, and our farms can’t grow many types of food. So, for many people here, we guajiro beans are giving them some of the nutrients they need. In addition to that, we’re also giving farmers a product to sell. We’re especially important to the Wayuu people, a local tribe. The Wayuu have been farming the land here for centuries. However, they can’t grow and raise animals like they used to. But beans like my friends and me are keeping the tribe and its culture alive. In fact, we even help people grow other foods, too. We add nitrogen to the soil, which helps foods like pumpkins and corn grow. We can’t do all this by ourselves, though. We sometimes need a bit of water, and the farmers here have found ways to get small amounts out of wells, clean it, and spread it on our land. I’m proud to be a guajiro bean. I’m strong, healthy, and easy to get along with. I’m so happy that I can help my Wayuu friends survive.
Which statement about life in Colombia is NOT true?
  • A Climate change has a serious impact on farming.
  • B Many people havedied because there has been little rain these years.
  • C The Wayuu have been living only on guajiro beans for centuries.
  • D Guajiro beans are important crops there because they are nutritious and help people grow other plants.
