The modern worker rolls out of bed, groans, and turns off an alarm clock before reluctantly getting up for the day’s work. But how did people get to work on time before alarm clocks were widely used? During the second Industrial Age, people toiled at unusual hours in mines or factories and often had to get up for work early in the morning. 請觀察第 18 格後方的補充說明:『Every morning, these people... were seen in big streets and small alleys』。

看到空格後面的那句 "Every morning, these people... were seen in big streets and small alleys"(每天早晨在大街小巷都能看到這些人)了嗎?既然到處都看得到,那當然是 familiar presences(熟悉的蹤影/存在)。
