In 2013, marking the 40th anniversary of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Mr. Lin Hwai-min created "Rice" based on the imagery of Chishang's rice paddies and staged it at the "Chishang Autumn Harvest Arts Festival." Over the past five years, "Rice" has been performed over a hundred times worldwide, receiving enthusiastic acclaim. The New York Times devoted a half-page spread to featuring Cloud Gate dancers performing in the Chishang rice paddies, which created a sensation. Following Cloud Gate's performances, Chishang has become a paradise yearned for by international visitors. In late October, Cloud Gate returns to Chishang to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Chishang Autumn Harvest Arts Festival. Mr. Lin Hwai-min specially selected "Pine Smoke," a dance incorporating the aesthetics of calligraphy, to pay tribute to the friends of Chishang, the home of calligraphy. In ancient times, people burned pine wood to collect smoke for making ink. "Pine Smoke" is inspired by this allusion, rendering the five shades of ink and the charm of cleverly leaving blank spaces. Against the backdrop of a hundred hectares of rippling rice waves, the dancers guide their bodies with "qi" (energy), echoing the mountains and drifting clouds. Their silk skirts and trousers flutter in the wind, allowing the audience to breathe and soar in sync with the dancers. With heaven and earth as its stage, the Chishang performance of "Pine Smoke" is definitely more spectacular than the theater version.
